Ethics Forum-Fixed links and other stuff BSE

I was going to fix the links from the previous post regarding the Ethics Forum but came to the conclusion that you should be able to find materials yourself. Go to the Nursing-Standard site and google organ donation or whatever and ...You could also try the same thing on the BMA website and 50,000.000 other sites. Check back issues of New Scientist-I now feel like I am patronising you so I will stop!

I would suggest that Team 1 take on the OPT IN arguement and Team 2 the OPT OUT. Look at and think about the points you have been given for consideration and aim to find evidence to argue for you position.

I would also suggest that only four people from each team will formally argue their side but the rest of the team will be just as prepared so that they can support from the floor. Perhaps everyone could be prepared to speak but only four will be chosen, by me, on the day. If we do it this way then everyone will have to pull their weight or risk looking unprepared.

We will aim for April 2, 4:15 till 5:45 for the event. I (we) will try to get other Y12/13 students-not only science students-to come along so that we have an audience and can get a range of views. This is important as everyone will benefit if there is a little pressure on the occaision.

If there are any other people whose names I have missed out (sorry!) and who want to formally get in volved then leave your name by way of comment at the end of this post. Any questions or suggestions leave a comment. Dont forget to leave your name and tutor group in the comment.

Ethics Forum

Ethical Debate ForumOrgan Donation

Organ Donation – How can we increase the number of organs available for transplantation.

Opt In
Current system
Donor card
National register

Opt Out
Proposed system – some countries in Europe use this.
Presume consent for donation unless specifically denied.

Some questions to consider:

Who owns a body after death
Should family be able to override a decision made by the deceased – ie if they have a donor card or are on a register.
What other options are there to increase organ availability? Should you be able to pay for an organ.
Would an opt in system actually make more organs available?

Ethical principles to consider :

Autonomy - the right to make decisions about your own body. Does this persist after death?
Beneficence – do good
Non-maleficence – do no harm (does this apply to live donors?)
Justice – how do we ensure that resources are shared fairly. Will all people have equal access to organs? How are choices made about who will receive an organ.

Burntwood Science Enrichment

I think it would be a good idea to use the blog as an extra way to communicate what is going on. So check in regularly or if you think you have missed out on something and you might find the answer here. We label these posts BSE. Madiha will be leading the lunchtime meeting on Tuesday 4th March and the information she will be sharing is:

• Kenton Lewis, Assistant Registrar (Fair Access) St George's, University of London, will be putting together a cycle of interview practice and learning conversations in about 3 weeks when he is back off leave.

• Mr Tedd is thinking about ways that he can enrich you science experience in terms of extracurricular activities that are focused on improving subject knowledge. This may include some after school sessions or weekend sessions. You will be informed of developments regarding this aspect of enrichment.

• You should put the list of addresses you have gleaned from the net/yellow pages etc into the folder named Science Enrichment that Madiha has created on the student drive.

• It is important that everyone takes an objective view on their educational/career path and plan for a range of educational and career paths.
